Recap

Pastor Travis Hearn continued the 'Match Made in Heaven' series with a message titled 'The Fight for Peace.' He opened by reading Romans 12:16, 'live in harmony with one another,' and used a musical analogy to illustrate how different individuals can create beautiful harmony in relationships. Pastor Travis emphasized that our world and relationships often lack peace because we fight each other instead of fighting for peace. He explained that the root of all conflict is the battle of desires within us, as described in James 4:1-2. The real enemy is not other people but spiritual forces of evil, as stated in Ephesians 6:12. Therefore, the key is to 'don't fight the person, fight the problem.' The sermon focused on becoming peacemakers, as Jesus called blessed in Matthew 5:9. Pastor Travis described conflict as being handed a lit 'bomb' of hurtful words, where we have the choice to either detonate it (escalate) or defuse it (make peace). He stressed that the goal in conflict is not to be right but to be righteous. Two biblical keys for being a peacemaker were given: first, ask God to calm your mind, guarding your heart as the source of everything (Proverbs 4:23), and using the shield of faith to extinguish the enemy's flaming arrows (Ephesians 6:16). Second, ask God to guard your mouth, as our words have great power to build up or destroy (James 3:5-10). The message concluded with the assurance from John 16:33 that in Christ we can have peace because He has overcome the world. Pastor Travis invited those who did not know Christ to begin a relationship with Him as the foundation for all other healthy relationships.

Main Points

  • The root of all conflict is internal desires, and our real enemy is not other people but spiritual forces; we must fight for peace, not against each other.
  • In conflict, our goal should be to be righteous, not right, by choosing to be peacemakers who defuse tension rather than escalate it.
  • Achieving peace requires asking God to guard our minds from destructive thoughts and our mouths from harmful words, relying on His Spirit for self-control.

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
