Recap
Pastor Travis Hearn opened the message by sharing the story of John Stephen Akhwari, the Tanzanian marathon runner who finished the 1968 Olympic race despite a severe injury, because his country sent him to finish, not just start. Pastor Travis used this powerful analogy to frame the Christian life as a marathon, emphasizing the biblical call to finish the race God has set before us. He noted that while many are great starters, fueled by initial excitement and infatuation, far fewer develop the perseverance to be finishers. The sermon provided three biblical keys to finishing strong. First, we must understand what race we are running—identifying God's specific purpose and vision for our lives, which shapes our preparation and mission, as described in Proverbs 29:18. Second, we must remove the distractions and hindrances that slow us down, whether sin, unhealthy relationships, or even good things that keep us from God's best, fixing our eyes on Jesus as instructed in Hebrews 12:1-2. Third, we must develop spiritual grit to keep pressing on, especially when the journey is hard. The most courageous step is often not the first, but the next one after a setback. Pastor Travis encouraged the congregation with Galatians 6:9, reminding them that a harvest awaits if they do not give up. He concluded with a passionate call to remember our value and purpose in Christ, to press on like the Apostle Paul did through immense hardship, and to build our lives on the firm foundation of Jesus.
